Blood Pressure Testing

Blood PressureBlood pressure evaluation is very important to our pets as well!

Why Blood Pressure Is Important

High blood pressure (Hypertension) as well as low blood pressure (Hypotension) can lead to or be the cause of significant disease in our pets, even death.

Abnormal blood pressure can occur as the result of an underlying heart problem, kidney disease, certain hormonal diseases, severe trauma, serious illness or injury or can occur during anesthesia. We monitor blood pressure routinely on patients in the exam room on an out patient basis and continuously during all anesthetic procedures.

How We Can Help

Taking blood pressure in our pets is easy to measure and painless. It can be done on birds as small as Cockatiels. And, if abnormal blood pressure a identified and treated early, it can prolong your pets life and the quality of that life.

Blood pressure readings are obtained when a patient is lying down, at rest. A cuff is applied to the leg/wing of the patient and then blown up to stop flow of blood to the lower part of the limb. The cuff is then slowly deflated to allow blood to flow again. The point that blood flow is resumed is the blood pressure reading.
